Q) Baby Gourmet is a packaged food. Aren’t all packaged foods unhealthy?
A) No, not all packaged foods are unhealthy. Often we do think of convenience foods as automatically unhealthy. And often they are – full of processed ingredients, additives, preservatives, colors, unhealthy fats and salt, while low in vitamins, minerals, fibre and healthy fats. Yet Baby Gourmet is a packaged food that offers health benefits similar to homemade baby food, but is more convenient.
Baby Gourmet is made from fresh organic ingredients, and uses whole grains. It is free of preservatives, colorings, added sugar and salt. While making your own baby food is also a healthy option, Baby Gourmet foods are produced from fresh produce, grains, and meats - likely more fresh than the ingredients that you buy in the grocery store! Baby Gourmet foods also retain flavours, colors and nutrients better than jarred baby foods (see kitchen for more details on the benefits of how our food is made). Jennifer House MSc, RD
Q) What are the benefits of Organic foods for my baby?
A) Organic foods are grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. In addition, genetically modified organisms, radiation, and use of sulphates, nitrates and nitrites (carcinogens!) are prohibited. People who eat organically grown foods are exposed to fewer pesticides. Two small studies with children have shown that pesticide residues in urine decrease when children eat organic vegetables and fruits. While the pesticides found on non-organic foods are cleared from adult bodies, the effects on the developing body and brain are not known. And children have such small bodies, with organs that are not fully developed, so even low levels of pesticides will affect them more than grown adults. Therefore, infants, children, breastfeeding and pregnant women will benefit most from eating organic foods. Besides reducing exposure to pesticides, organic produce contains higher levels of phytochemicals than conventionally grown produce. Organic food production also supports sustainable farming methods that will protect the environment for our children. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, recycling waste, and use of insects to control pests. Pesticides are not polluting near-by waters polluting, and the soil on organic farms remains healthy. Jennifer House MSc, RD
